Grammarly is a writing tool, spelling, grammar, punctuation checker, and much more. Their mission statement: To improve lives by improving communication.
Grammarly helps me improve my writing every day, whether it’s a blog post like the one you’re reading, an email, or other content that I’m writing.
I know it will help improve your writing as well!
So what is Grammarly and how does it work? Let us explore.
What Is Grammarly
Grammarly is an online, cloud-based writing tool that checks for various writing errors, like spelling mistakes, incorrect grammar and punctuation, sentence structure, and much more.
The Spelling Checker
One of the primary reasons I use Grammarly is to check for spelling mistakes I make. The Grammarly software incorporates a very robust spell-checking tool that scans your entire document, email, whatever your writing for spelling mistakes and suggests the correct spelling.
Grammarly will search and seek out all grammar errors, including the way sentences are structured and the proper use of nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, etc., and make suggestions for their correction. This is very helpful to me as I’m not a professional writer but look like one with Grammarly’s help.
Proper punctuation has always been my downfall. I can never remember when and where to use it correctly. Commas, colons, and semi-colons forget them, and thanks to Grammarly, I don’t need to be concerned; Grammarly catches all my mistakes and fixes them, so I look like a professional writer.
In fact, according to a recent Grammarly Insights email I received (a useful and helpful weekly report of your writing activity), my TOP 3 MISTAKES are all related to punctuation. They are:
- Missing period
- Missing comma in a compound sentence
- Missing comma(s)
Additionally, Grammarly provides many advanced tools and “checkers” to its Premium users, such as plagiarism detection, vocabulary enhancements, Full-sentence rewrite suggestions, and more. See Grammarly Plans

How Does Grammarly Work?
Grammarly uses very complex software programs to analyze each word and sentence written and looks for errors and ways to improve your text.
When writing on a desktop or laptop, it’s easy to write your content in word or doc’s then copy it over to Grammarly to check it.
Once Grammarly makes the corrections, I copy it and paste the corrected version back into the document or email.
Often, I’ll write my content in Grammarly, so my errors are caught upfront and corrected as I type. Grammarly also saves your work as you go, which is great if you need to step away from your computer for a bit.
It’s important to note: Grammarly does not automatically make each correction it suggests. You, the writer, have the control. It’s a quick and easy manual process. If you don’t feel a particular correction or suggestion is necessary, then you don’t have to make it.
Who is Grammarly for?
As you can probably tell by this point, I’m a massive fan of Grammarly and feel it’s a useful and required tool for anyone who writes.
- Business Professionals
- Content creators
- Sales Professionals
- ANYONE & EVERYONE that writes either for a living or hobby.
The reality is, what you write, how you write, and how it reads (correctness) can directly affect your reputation. Let Grammarly Help!
Grammarly has three plans, Free, Premium, and a Business. I’ll discuss the Free and Premium plans below.
The Free Plan is terrific if you are only interested in their Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation checkers. The free account works wonderfully for those who have a limited budget or don’t require the Premium’s advanced features. Signup is quick and easy, and you can start using your free account right away.
The Grammarly Premium Plan includes the Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation checkers as well as advanced tools to ensure everything you write is clear, concise, and correct.
What I like most about Grammarly Premium is it provides detailed information about each of my grammar and punctuation mistakes that I make and allows me to review my error and make the correction.
Grammarly does not state anywhere that they limit the corrections for Free subscribers but do I believe the Premium plans does find and suggest more fixes than the free version.
In addition to the Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation checkers, below is a list from the Grammarly website of the additional tools included with Premium. All of them are super valuable to any writer at any level.
- Clarity-focused sentence rewrites
- Tone adjustments
- Plagiarism detection
- Word choice
- Formality level
- Additional advanced suggestions
How Much Does Grammarly Cost?
Well, the first is obvious, the Free Plan is free, but as you would expect, with anything free comes limitations. In this case, you only get the Spell, Grammar, and Punctuation Checkers.
The Premium Plan, on the other hand, does have a cost. In my opinion, a reasonable fee for everything included and the overwhelming, confident feeling I get have knowing my content is correct, clear, and concise.
You can signup for Premium and choose the monthly, quarterly, or annual payment plan. I have the annual, yearly subscription plan to Grammarly Premium as the savings is 61.08% compared to the monthly plan. That’s HUGE!
According to Grammarly Support, as of December 2020, the cost is as follows:
- The monthly subscription to Grammarly Premium costs $29.95 USD/month
- The quarterly subscription to Grammarly Premium costs $19.98/month (billed as one payment of $59.95 USD)
- The annual subscription to Grammarly Premium costs $11.66/month (billed as one payment of $139.95 USD)
